More Than A Thousand Words
As fellow parents, we could sit down and engage in a fireside chat for hours, share war stories about our daily experiences. One such discussion would center around the stressful process of having formal pictures taken of our kids. You know the drill: carting a reluctuant, overdressed, underfed, sleepy child to the ubiquitous studio portrait center located in some mall at a corner near you. After two or three episodes of this, you get used to the hassle, only to realize that the final product isn't quite worth the time, tantrums and tears. You could go independent and approach a freelance photographer, but you're not exactly made of money.
Bopomo Pictures is the perfect marriage of both. This new Kitsilano studio has redefined studio photography. While portraits are taken inside a studio facility, the photographers have full creative license to bring out the fun and impulsive side of your child. The result? We recently tried it out with our own kids and were tickled pink with the shots. Think vintage pedal cars and airplanes. Rose petals, soft blankets, macintosh apples. A blink, a wink, the slight curve of a smile. Elayne Wandler and her crew can observe and capture the nuances of your precious cargo with expert sharpness. It's quite amazing that photography was simply a hobby for Elayne while she was engrossed in her former life as a top executive at local biotechnology giant, QLT.
Step into Bopomo's 1,300-square foot bright and airy studio. Designed by Box Interior Design (responsible for the award-winning Vancouver Art Gallery cafe), the space boasts two separate shooting areas, a small retail section and a viewing bar where customers choose their photos. While you're busy admiring thumbnails, don't worry about having to keep Junior occupied. He'll probably forget about you in their funky, modern play area. For the Huggies set, there is a washroom with a changing station.
Sitting fees begin at $19.95 for one child ($29.95 for two or more). Photos are sold in sheets (8”x10”, 5”x7”, 4”x5”, and wallet size denominations). Prices per sheet range from $24.95 to $36.95 depending on the number of sheets purchased. Other packages are available. The pictures are printed on location and are ready for pick up the next day.
